The 5 Questions Every Agent Should Ask Before Buying an AI Tool
Before you buy another AI tool for your real estate business, ask these five questions. Most AI tools fail real estate agents before they even start — not because the technology doesn't work, but because the agent buys the wrong tool for the wrong problem, with no plan for how it fits into their workflow. The questions below cut through the marketing and force the answer you actually need: is this tool going to produce results in your specific business, or is it going to collect dust like the last one?
What Should I Look for in AI for Real Estate?
The short answer: specificity, integration, and simplicity. A tool built for real estate specifically will outperform a generic AI tool every time. Integration means the tool connects to what you already use — your calendar, your CRM, your phone number. Simplicity means it runs with minimal setup and maintenance. Any tool that fails on two of those three criteria is a risk. Any tool that fails on all three is a waste of money.
Question 1: What Specific Problem Does This Tool Solve?
This is the most important question — and most agents can't answer it before they buy. If your answer is "it does everything" or "it's an all-in-one AI platform," that's a red flag, not a feature. The AI tools that produce results for real estate agents solve one problem well: instant lead response, phone coverage, follow-up automation, call transcription and logging.
Question 2: How Does It Connect to What I Already Use?
A tool that doesn't integrate with your calendar, CRM, or phone system creates manual work — which is the exact opposite of why you're buying AI. Before you commit, ask the vendor directly: does this connect to my specific CRM? Does it book appointments into my calendar automatically? Does it log calls without me entering anything manually? If the answer to any of those is "you can export a CSV and import it," that's a no.
Question 3: How Long Does It Take to Set Up and Who Sets It Up?
Most AI tools are sold as "easy to set up" and are anything but. Ask for a realistic setup timeline. Ask who handles the configuration — you, their team, or a third-party implementation partner. Ask what happens if something breaks: who fixes it, how fast, and what's the support model? A tool that takes three weeks to set up and requires a consultant every time something goes wrong is not a productivity solution. It's a new job.
Question 4: Can I See It Working on Real Real Estate Conversations?
Any credible AI vendor should be able to show you a live demo using real estate scenarios — an incoming call from a buyer asking about a listing, a lead follow-up text sequence, an appointment booking flow. Ask to hear the AI voice agent on an actual call. Ask to see the follow-up messages that go out to a new Zillow lead. If they can't demo it in your context, don't buy it.
Question 5: What Does Success Actually Look Like in 90 Days?
Get specific with the vendor before you sign. Ask: if this tool works as promised, what changes in my business in 90 days? What metrics should I expect to see move — response time, lead contact rate, booked appointments, hours saved per week? A vendor who can't describe the outcome in measurable terms either doesn't know their product well enough or knows the numbers don't hold up.
The Real Evaluation Criteria
After you've asked the five questions, run it through this filter: will this tool free up time and protect my pipeline, or will it create maintenance work I have to manage on top of an already full schedule? The AI tools worth buying make your business run when you're not running it.
